An eSIM is a digital SIM: a chip built into your phone that downloads a mobile plan instead of using a plastic card. A travel eSIM gives you prepaid mobile data abroad. You install it in two minutes by scanning a QR code, it connects when you land, and you avoid roaming fees.
How an eSIM works
Every eSIM-compatible phone has a small chip (the eUICC) soldered to its board. Instead of inserting a card, you download a "profile" from a mobile operator. The profile contains the same information as a physical SIM, so the phone treats it exactly like one.
A phone can store several eSIM profiles and usually run two lines at once (dual SIM). That is why you can keep your home number active for calls and texts while a travel eSIM handles mobile data.
Travel eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM card
| Travel eSIM | Bought online before you leave, works on arrival, prepaid price known in advance, no store visit. |
|---|---|
| Roaming with your home plan | Nothing to install, but daily fees or per-MB charges can be high outside your plan zone. |
| Local SIM card | Often cheap data, but you need a shop, sometimes a passport registration, and you remove your home SIM. |
What you need
- An eSIM-compatible phone: most iPhones since the XR/XS (2018), Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and many recent models from other brands.
- A carrier-unlocked phone. A phone locked to one operator cannot use another operator’s eSIM.
- A Wi-Fi or data connection for the two-minute installation, ideally before you travel.
Data only: what about calls and WhatsApp?
Most travel eSIMs, including SimOwl’s, are data-only: they give you internet but no local phone number. WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Telegram and other apps keep working with your usual number because they run over data.
Your home SIM can stay switched on for SMS such as bank codes. Turn off data roaming on that line so it does not use data abroad.
Quick answers
Can I keep my WhatsApp number with a travel eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp is linked to your account, not to the SIM that provides data, so it keeps your usual number.
Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?
Yes, on dual-SIM phones. Use the physical SIM for calls and texts and the eSIM for mobile data.
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
Dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
When does a travel eSIM start?
Install it before you leave. The plan starts when the phone first connects to a network at your destination.
