Versions to watch out for
- iPhones sold in mainland China have no eSIM (a few Hong Kong and Macao models are exceptions). Versions sold everywhere else support it.
How to install an eSIM on the iPhone 12
You receive the QR code by email and on your order page right after payment. Install it at home on Wi-Fi: the plan only starts when the device first connects to a network at your destination.
- 1Open Settings, then tap Mobile Data (called Cellular in the US).
- 2Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
- 3Scan the QR code from your email, or enter the details manually if the email is on this iPhone.
- 4Label the new line "Travel" and keep your usual number as the default line for calls and messages.
- 5For Mobile Data, choose the Travel line.
When you land, turn on Data Roaming for the travel eSIM only and check that mobile data uses it. Leave roaming off on your home line so your operator does not charge you.
