How to install a travel eSIM on iPhone

On iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Data (Cellular in the US) > Add eSIM > Use QR Code, then scan the QR code from your email. Label the new line "Travel", keep your usual line for calls and texts, and choose the travel eSIM for mobile data. When you land, turn on Data Roaming for the travel line only.

Before you start

  • iPhone XR, XS or newer, carrier-unlocked.
  • A Wi-Fi connection (install at home or at the airport before you fly).
  • The QR code from your SimOwl email, open on another screen or printed. On the iPhone itself, use the install button in the email instead.

Install the eSIM

  1. 1Open Settings, then tap Mobile Data (called Cellular in the US).
  2. 2Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
  3. 3Scan the QR code from your email. If you are reading the email on the same iPhone, tap the install link or enter the details manually.
  4. 4Tap Continue and wait about a minute while the eSIM downloads.
  5. 5Give the new line a label such as "Travel" so you can recognise it.
  6. 6For Default Line, keep your usual number for calls and messages.
  7. 7For Mobile Data, choose the Travel line. Turn off "Allow Mobile Data Switching" so your home line is not used by mistake.

When you arrive

  1. 1Go to Settings > Mobile Data and tap the Travel line.
  2. 2Turn on the line if needed, then turn on Data Roaming for this line. Roaming must be on because the eSIM uses partner networks.
  3. 3Check that your home line has Data Roaming turned off.
  4. 4Wait a few seconds for the network name and 4G/5G icon to appear.

If it does not connect

  • Restart the iPhone and wait one minute after you land.
  • Check that Mobile Data is set to the Travel line and that Data Roaming is on for it.
  • In the Travel line settings, open Network Selection and pick another listed network manually.
  • Do not delete the eSIM: a QR code can usually be used only once. Contact support instead.

Quick answers

Can I install the eSIM before my trip?

Yes, and it is the best option. The plan only starts when the phone connects at your destination.

Why does the iPhone say "eSIM cannot be added"?

The phone may be locked to a carrier, offline, or the QR code was already used. Check that the iPhone is unlocked and on Wi-Fi, then contact support.

Do I need to turn on data roaming?

Yes, on the travel eSIM line only. Travel eSIMs connect through partner networks, which counts as roaming. You are not charged roaming fees by SimOwl.

Can I reuse the same eSIM on my next trip?

Yes. Keep it installed and top it up from your order page; you do not need a new QR code.

Ready for your trip?

Pick your destination, pay, and get your eSIM by email in minutes.
